Rotary Drum Mixer
A rotary drum mixer blends large batches of powders, granules and natural products quickly and with very little energy. There is no agitator inside, so particles are never sheared, crushed or heated by friction. Each particle keeps its original size, shape and properties, which matters for coated granules, agglomerated food powders, polymer compounds and battery materials.
How a Rotary Drum Mixer Works
Product enters at the center line of a slowly rotating vessel fitted with specially shaped and angled vanes. Rotation and gravity redistribute the product randomly, while material accumulating at the outlet end causes a backflow. Together these flows create a gentle, three-dimensional mixing action that typically reaches a homogeneous blend in 1 to 5 minutes. When the outlet valve opens, the vanes carry the product out within minutes, and the drum empties itself completely.
Rotary Drum Mixer - Benefits
A rotary drum mixer gives gentle, low-shear blending of powders, granules and fragile materials while protecting product integrity. Its gravity-based principle delivers excellent uniformity, high efficiency and low operating cost.

More Than Mixing
Because every particle is always in motion, the drum is also an efficient process vessel for liquid injection (coating, impregnation, wetting), heat transfer (heating, cooling, drying), freezing and disinfection.
Rotary Drum Mixer for Food Processing
Sanitary design and easy cleaning come first. Welds and surface finishes receive special attention. All product-contact parts are 316L or 304 stainless steel, and other parts use food-grade materials. A retractable inlet and outlet make cleaning and maintenance quick. Typical products include breakfast cereals, granola, tea, milk powder, infant cereals, instant coffee, seasoned snacks, nuts, dried fruit and bakery mixes.

Rotary Drum Mixer for Chemicals and Plastics
Gentle handling preserves granule structure in detergents, fertilizer coatings, polymer compounds and battery powders, and the drum blends components with very different densities without segregation.
Rotary Drum Mixer for Pharmaceuticals
Closed, cleanable designs suit pharmaceutical and nutraceutical powders that must be blended uniformly without damage. For other mixing duties, compare our ribbon mixer, plow mixer and conical screw mixer.

Frequently Asked Questions
A rotary drum mixer is an industrial mixer that blends powders, granules and bulk solids gently and homogeneously. A slowly rotating horizontal drum with shaped vanes controls product flow so materials mix efficiently and keep their original particle size.
The horizontal vessel rotates at low speed. Internal vanes lift and redistribute product by gravity, and the combination of forward flow and backflow creates a uniform mix with low mechanical stress and minimal segregation.
Fine powders, granules, chemicals, polymers, minerals, food ingredients, pharmaceutical powders and natural products. The gentle tumbling suits fragile materials that must not be damaged.
Excellent uniformity with low energy use, no frictional heat, minimal degradation and segregation, easy cleaning and low maintenance.
It depends on the product, batch size and required uniformity, but many products reach a homogeneous blend in about 1 to 5 minutes.
Sizes range from laboratory and pilot units up to industrial drums with net product volumes of about 6,600 gallons (25 m³).
Yes. Spray systems add liquids for coating, impregnation and wetting while the drum keeps mixing evenly.
Yes. The drum can be configured for heating, cooling, drying, freezing and disinfection using steam, hot oil, water, air or cryogenic systems.
They are used in food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, plastics, mineral, cosmetics and battery-material plants.
A rotary drum mixer moves product gently by gravity and suits fragile, low-shear applications. A ribbon mixer uses helical ribbons for stronger convective mixing and suits more intensive blending. The best choice depends on the material, mixing intensity and process.
