Conical Screw Mixer
A conical screw mixer, also known as an orbiting screw or vertical cone mixer, blends dry powders and powders with liquid additions very gently. A screw rotates on its own axis to lift product from the bottom of the cone to the top, while an arm carries it in orbit along the cone wall. The product circulates continuously with very low shear and no dead zones.
The same vessel can be used for vacuum drying, homogenizing, deaeration, heating and cooling. That makes it a common choice for pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, pigments, coatings, food ingredients, plastics, feed and mining applications. Batch units are available up to about 1,850 gallons (7,000 L) of working capacity.

Conical Screw Mixer Construction
Mixers are available with one or two screws. Each has a conical body, a flanged cover with feed and inspection ports, and a pneumatic discharge valve at the apex of the cone. The screw’s rotation and orbit create a three-dimensional flow: product rises along the screw, spreads horizontally and falls back onto the material below, giving thorough homogenization without segregation.
Construction is carbon steel or 304 or 316 stainless steel, depending on the product. Special linings can be added against abrasion, corrosion or sticking.
Conical Vacuum Screw Dryer
The vacuum dryer version is a batch dryer for powders, granules, pastes and viscous slurries, especially products that contain solvents or are heat-sensitive. Vacuum lowers the boiling point, so moisture and solvents evaporate at lower temperatures, while the jacket and heated screw supply the heat. Solvent can be condensed and recovered.
