Screw Conveyor
A well-engineered screw conveyor is still the most dependable way to move bulk solids over short and medium distances. TiERMAX designs each conveyor around the material and the plant layout, from food-grade tubular units to heavy-duty troughs for cement, ash, sand and minerals.
Single-span conveyors run up to roughly 47 ft (14.5 m) without an intermediate hanger bearing, and longer lines up to about 200 ft (60 m) are possible. Self-cleaning and shaftless designs handle sticky, abrasive and explosive-risk materials that cause trouble in standard conveyors, and sanitary tubular conveyors with quick-clean features are available for food and powder processing. Drives can be supplied for 480 V / 60 Hz power.
Screw Conveyor - Models
Feeding screw conveyor
Feeding screw conveyors charge furnaces, fluidized beds and incinerators under harsh conditions.
Custom geometries, wear protection, heating or cooling and multi-shaft designs are available.
Heating screw conveyor
Heating screw conveyors heat, dry, melt or condition bulk materials while conveying them.
Hollow-flight construction and a choice of thermal oil, steam or electric heat give efficient heat transfer.
Cooling screw conveyor
Cooling screw conveyors cool hot ash, sludge and other bulk solids as they move.
Hollow flights, self-cleaning options and multi-shaft designs deliver fast, reliable cooling.
Screw Conveyor - Benefits
A screw conveyor moves powders, granules and other bulk solids horizontally, on an incline or vertically with a simple, enclosed design. It delivers a continuous, controllable flow with low maintenance and low energy use.

Screw conveyor engineering support
Choosing the right diameter, pitch, speed and trough style is what separates a conveyor that runs for decades from one that plugs every week. Our engineers review the material’s bulk density, particle size, moisture, abrasiveness and temperature, then size the conveyor for the required capacity in ft³/h or tons per hour.

Specialized screw conveyors
Beyond standard conveying, TiERMAX supplies feeding screw conveyors, cooling screw conveyors, heating screw conveyors and petroleum coke preheaters for industries ranging from waste-to-energy to aluminum production.
Feeding screw conveyors
Feeding screws charge combustion chambers, calciners, fluidized-bed systems and incinerators. Where an outboard bearing cannot be used at the discharge end, cantilevered designs and multi-shaft arrangements keep material moving. Wear-resistant flights and liners extend service life on abrasive products, and cooling or heating can be integrated to protect the structure.

Cooling screw conveyors
Hollow-flight cooling screws circulate water or another coolant through the shaft, flights and jacket, bringing hot ash, catalyst, clinker or calcined material down from as high as 2,190°F (1,200°C) to a safe handling temperature while conveying it.

Heating screw conveyors
Heating screws use thermal oil, steam or electric heat to dry, preheat or condition bulk solids up to about 840°F (450°C), combining conveying and thermal processing in one compact unit.

Frequently Asked Questions
A screw conveyor is a bulk handling machine that moves powders, granules and other dry materials using a rotating helical flight inside a trough or tube. It is used for conveying, feeding, metering and transferring material between process steps.
A motor turns the helical screw inside an enclosed housing. As it rotates, the flights push material forward at a rate set by screw diameter, pitch and speed. Conveyors can be horizontal, inclined or vertical.
Screw conveyors handle chemicals, food ingredients, minerals, fertilizers, cement, plastic pellets, biomass, ash and many other bulk solids. Flight type, speed and materials of construction are selected for density, moisture, abrasiveness and flowability.
A tubular screw conveyor is fully enclosed, making it ideal for fine powders, dust control and inclined runs.
A U-trough screw conveyor handles higher capacities and gives easy access for inspection and cleaning.
The right choice depends on the material, the capacity and the installation.
Common types include:
• Tubular screw conveyors for dust-tight transfer of powders.
• U-trough screw conveyors for high capacity and easy maintenance.
• Screw feeders for metering into process equipment.
• Cooling and heating screw conveyors for thermal processing.
• Shaftless screw conveyors for sticky, stringy or sludge-like materials.
Yes. Screw feeders with variable-frequency drives meter material accurately into mixers, reactors, packers and other process equipment.
Key selection factors:
• Material properties and bulk density
• Required capacity
• Length and incline angle
• Operating temperature
• Abrasiveness and moisture
• Dust containment
• Sanitary or hazardous-location requirements
A conveyor engineered for these conditions runs reliably and lasts longer.
