Drum Blender

A drum blender, also called a tumble blender or container blender, clamps a closed drum, bin or jar and rotates it on an inclined axis. The three-dimensional tumbling motion mixes the contents evenly with very low shear, so fragile granules, coated particles and friable powders keep their size and shape.

Because product is blended in the same container it is stored and transported in, there is no blender bowl to clean between batches, no transfer loss and very little risk of cross-contamination. That makes drum blenders a natural fit for pharmaceutical APIs and excipients, nutraceutical and vitamin premixes, protein powders, spices, pigments and plastic additives. The MIXOMAT range is modular, covering laboratory, pilot and production scale, including cleanroom use. Machines are simple, durable and energy-efficient, and are built for GMP environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A drum blender is a batch mixer that rotates a sealed drum or container to gently blend powders, granules and other bulk solids. The tumbling action produces a homogeneous mix with minimal product damage.

They are common in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, chemical, cosmetics and plastics plants for blending dry powders and granules.

Powders, granules, pellets and flakes, and in some cases liquids or liquid additions. Both free-flowing and sensitive materials blend gently and uniformly.

Models cover lab jars of a fraction of a liter up to production drums of about 105 gallons (400 L) and loads up to about 880 lb (400 kg). Custom holders for other containers are available.

Yes. Options include different container holders, single- or double-sided frames, variable-speed drives, PLC control with recipes, and explosion-protected designs. Hazardous-location requirements are reviewed for each U.S. project.

Yes. Stainless steel construction with hygienic finishes suits pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic production, and the design supports cleaning and GMP practices.

Blend time depends on the materials, batch size and target uniformity. We recommend trials to set the optimum time for each product.

Gentle mixing, excellent uniformity, low maintenance, easy cleaning, dust-free operation with sealed containers, and blending in the process container, which reduces handling and cross-contamination.
