Rotary Valve

A rotary valve, also called a rotary airlock, meters bulk solids at a steady rate while sealing one process zone from another. TiERMAX rotary valves are used under silos, hoppers, cyclones and dust collectors, and as feeders into pneumatic conveying lines and process equipment.

Standard valves handle dusty, granular and abrasive products such as cement, coal, ash, plastics and carbon black. Self-cleaning valves use a mechanical scraper to keep the rotor pockets clear when handling sticky, moist or bridging material. High-pressure and pressure-shock-resistant designs serve pneumatic and explosion-protected systems, and every valve can be configured with special materials, seals, wear protection and heating or cooling jackets.

Rotary Valve - Models

Three rotary valve designs cover most applications: high-temperature, self-cleaning and high-pressure. Each is configured around the material, temperature and pressure of your process.

High-Temperature Rotary Valve

High-Temperature Rotary Valve

TiERMAX high-temperature self-cleaning rotary valves handle bulk solids from about 750°F to 2,190°F (400–1,200°C). The rotor and other critical parts are made from heat-resistant materials, and the shaft and housing can be water-cooled for extreme service.

Self-cleaning Rotary Valve

Self-cleaning Rotary Valve

The self-cleaning rotary valve is built for sticky, moist and bridging materials. A synchronized scraper clears the rotor pockets on every revolution, preventing build-up and keeping discharge steady.

High-Pressure Rotary Valve

High-Pressure Rotary Valve

The high-pressure rotary valve is designed for pressure and vacuum conveying. Pressure-shock-resistant and explosion-protected versions provide dependable feeding under demanding process conditions.

Rotary Valve - Benefits

TiERMAX rotary valves combine accurate metering, an effective air seal and rugged construction. They keep bulk solids flowing reliably in conveying, dust collection and process systems.

Rotary airlock valves for every bulk material

A rotary valve works by volumetric displacement: a bladed rotor turns inside a close-fitting housing, filling each pocket at the inlet and emptying it at the outlet. Speed sets the throughput, and the tight rotor clearance limits air leakage between the two sides. That makes the same valve both a feeder and an airlock.

For sticky or moist materials, our self-cleaning rotary valve adds a synchronized scraper that sweeps every pocket on each turn, preventing build-up and blockages that stop standard valves. For dilute- and dense-phase conveying, high-pressure versions with tight-clearance rotors, wear-resistant liners and pressure-shock-resistant housings are available, and explosion-protected designs can be supplied for combustible dust applications.

High-temperature rotary valves

High-temperature rotary valves handle products from about 750°F up to 2,190°F (400–1,200°C), such as hot clinker, petcoke, calcined minerals and pyrolysis char. Heat-resistant alloys are used for the rotor and housing, and water-cooled shafts and housings protect bearings at the highest temperatures. A self-cleaning version combines heat resistance with forced mechanical cleaning for material that is both hot and sticky.

Rotor diameters range from roughly 3 in to 90 in (80–2,300 mm), with fixed or variable speed drives sized for your capacity and 480 V / 60 Hz supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

A rotary valve meters, feeds and discharges powders, granules and other bulk solids while acting as an airlock between areas of different pressure.

Powders, granules, pellets, ash, cement, coal, chemicals, plastics, minerals, food ingredients and other dry bulk solids.

Choose a self-cleaning valve for sticky, moist, cohesive or bridging materials that would build up in the pockets of a standard valve.

A synchronized scraper cleans every rotor pocket continuously, preventing build-up and blockages and reducing manual cleaning.

Yes. High-pressure rotary valves are available for vacuum and pressure service, from roughly 0.6 psia up to about 435 psi (40 mbar abs to 30 bar) depending on design.

Yes. Hardened wear sleeves, replaceable sealing strips and abrasion-resistant materials are available for abrasive products.

Yes. Explosion-protected designs can be supplied for combustible dust applications, and hazardous-location requirements are reviewed for each U.S. project.

Cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel and special alloys for corrosive, abrasive, high-temperature and sanitary duties.

Yes. Heating or cooling jackets keep the product at the right temperature and help with temperature-sensitive materials.

Selection depends on the material, particle size, capacity, pressure differential, temperature and wear behavior. A valve configured for these conditions lasts longer and performs better.
