Solid Flow Meter

A solid flow meter (bulk solids flowmeter) gives a continuous, accurate reading of how much material is passing through a gravity chute, without stopping the process. It is based on Newton’s second law: product slides over a specially curved measuring chute, and the centripetal force it creates is directly proportional to the mass flow rate. That force is transferred to a precision load cell.

Unlike impact plates, which are strongly affected by changes in bulk density, particle size and friction, the centripetal-force principle keeps those variables from disturbing the reading. The meter has no moving parts, so it needs almost no maintenance, and it can be calibrated at the factory to simplify startup.

Measuring Range and Accuracy

The display shows the current flow rate in lb/h or tons/h and the totalized quantity. Typical system error is ±0.5% of the measuring range, with 0.3% achievable under good conditions. Meter sizes cover about 66 lb/h up to roughly 330 short tons/h (30 kg/h–300 t/h), for bulk densities of about 1.2 to 220 lb/ft³. Surging or pulsating feed has very little effect on accuracy.

Self-Cleaning for Sticky Products

For products that tend to leave deposits, an automatic air-jet cleaning system keeps the measuring chute clear.

Where Solid Flow Meters Are Used

Typical U.S. applications include cement and fly ash dosing, pulverized coal and petcoke feed to kilns and burners, limestone, gypsum and alumina handling, plastic pellet blending, fertilizer, grain, sugar and salt. The meter installs between a rotary valve, screw conveyor or bucket elevator and the next process step. For dosing to a setpoint, pair it with a screw feeder.

Frequently Asked Questions

A solid flow meter is an industrial instrument that measures the mass flow rate of free-flowing bulk materials such as powders, granules, pellets and grains.

Product moving over a curved measuring chute creates a centripetal force proportional to mass flow. That force is transmitted to a load cell for precise measurement.

Powders, pellets, granules, grains, plastic resins, minerals, chemicals and many other free-flowing solids.

High accuracy, no moving parts, near maintenance-free operation, reliable continuous measurement and little sensitivity to bulk density changes.

An impact scale's reading shifts with bulk density, particle size and friction. The centripetal-force meter is far less affected, so readings are more stable and accurate.

Very little. With no moving parts, the meter runs reliably for long periods with minimal attention.

Food, chemical, plastics, mineral, cement, power, agricultural and recycling plants.

Yes. Meters can be calibrated at the factory to simplify installation and give accurate readings from startup.

Typical system accuracy is ±0.5% of the measuring range, with 0.3% achievable under optimum conditions, and repeatability is excellent.

Yes. One meter measures a wide range of free-flowing materials with low sensitivity to density or particle size changes.
