High Temperature Screw Heater
Thermal oil and steam top out well below the temperatures needed for pyrolysis, calcination or thermal desorption. The high-temperature screw heater solves that with fully electric heating that operates from about 445°F to 1,200°F (230–650°C).
Electric heating elements sit inside a hermetically sealed screw shaft, embedded in a low-melting metal. Once hot, that metal becomes liquid and spreads heat quickly and evenly along the full length of the screw. An electrically heated trough jacket can be added for even more heating surface and stable temperatures.
Because there is no heat transfer fluid, there are no oil heaters, pumps, expansion tanks or leaks to manage. The result is a simpler plant with precise temperature control, fast response and high energy efficiency.

Operating Principle of the Electric Screw Heater
The screw shaft is the core of the design. Heating rods are installed inside a sealed core filled with a special low-melting-point metal. Above about 445°F (230°C) the metal is liquid and acts as an almost ideal heat transfer medium, distributing energy uniformly along the shaft. As the screw turns, the product is conveyed, mixed continuously and kept in close contact with the precisely controlled hot surfaces.

Applications: Pyrolysis, Calcination and PFAS Treatment
Each unit is engineered to your specification with heat-resistant alloys, optimized screw geometry and integrated controls. Typical duties include pyrolysis of biomass and plastics, biochar production, calcination of minerals and metal oxides, high-temperature drying, catalyst regeneration and reactivation of spent activated carbon.
A key U.S. application is thermal desorption of PFAS and other persistent contaminants from soil, biosolids and spent adsorbents, where the contaminants must be driven into the gas phase for capture and destruction.

Frequently Asked Questions
An electric screw heater, or high-temperature screw heater, is an electrically heated screw heat exchanger for continuous thermal treatment of bulk solids. It conveys and heats in one compact unit.
Heating elements sit inside a sealed core in the screw shaft. A highly conductive liquid metal carries heat evenly along the shaft, giving fast, uniform heating of the conveyed material.
It treats bulk solids at roughly 445°F to 1,110°F (230–600°C) as standard, and up to about 1,200°F (650°C), beyond the limits of conventional screw heat exchangers.
It needs no thermal oil, so the system is simpler, with less maintenance, no leakage risk, precise temperature control and fast response.
Pyrolysis, calcination, high-temperature drying, thermal activation of solids and thermal desorption of contaminants such as PFAS from soil, biosolids and spent activated carbon.
Yes. It reaches about 1,110°F (600°C) with uniform heat, which suits thermal desorption where PFAS must be transferred into the gas phase for separation and treatment.
Contaminated soil, sewage sludge and biosolids, activated carbon, minerals, biomass and other materials that need controlled high-temperature treatment.
Uniform heat transfer, high efficiency, accurate temperature control, compact design and reliable continuous operation, with simpler plant infrastructure than thermal fluid systems.
Yes. Each unit is engineered for your material, throughput, temperature profile, screw geometry, alloys, insulation and controls.
