Ribbon Mixer
The ribbon mixer, or ribbon blender, is the most widely used industrial mixer for dry powders and granules. A horizontal shaft in a U-shaped trough carries an inner and an outer helical ribbon wound in opposite directions. The outer ribbon moves product toward the center while the inner ribbon pushes it back toward the ends. That counter-flow produces a uniform blend quickly, at low speed and with little power.
Low tip speed makes the ribbon blender a good choice for free-flowing, fragile and heat-sensitive ingredients. Spray nozzles can add oils, flavors or binders during mixing, and jackets allow heating or cooling. Ribbon mixers are used for plastic powders, pigments, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, catalysts, protein powders, vitamin premixes, spices and seasonings, bakery mixes, animal feed and cosmetics.

How a Ribbon Blender Works
Material is loaded into the trough and the counter-wound ribbons lift, turn and move it in both axial and radial directions. Every particle is brought into contact with the others, giving a homogeneous blend in a short cycle with minimal segregation. Ribbon geometry, pitch and clearance are matched to your product, bulk density and fill level.

Options for U.S. Processors
Construction can be carbon steel, 304 or 316 stainless steel, or wear-resistant steel for abrasive minerals. Options include high-speed choppers for lump breaking and liquid dispersion, liquid spray bars, heating or cooling jackets, vacuum or pressure designs, drop-bottom or slide-gate discharge valves, variable frequency drives, load cells for batching, and explosion-protected designs for combustible dusts.

Cleaning
Full-length hinged covers, polished sanitary finishes and a discharge valve flush with the trough bottom keep residue low and make washdown fast.
Maintenance
Robust shaft seals, external bearings and a direct gear motor drive keep maintenance simple. For more intensive mixing or liquid addition, see the plow mixer. For very gentle in-container blending, see the drum blender.

Frequently Asked Questions
A ribbon mixer is an industrial batch mixer for blending dry powders, granules and other bulk solids. It has a horizontal U-shaped trough and a shaft with inner and outer helical ribbons that create a counter-flow mixing action.
The outer ribbon moves product toward the center and the inner ribbon moves it back toward the ends, so material circulates continuously and blends uniformly with minimal segregation.
Powders, granules, food ingredients, chemicals, plastic powders, feed, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, pigments and catalysts. The design is matched to bulk density, particle size, moisture and flow.
High mixing efficiency, excellent uniformity, gentle handling, low energy use, simple operation and maintenance, and options for liquid addition, heating and cooling.
Batch sizes range from about 2 ft³ (55 L) for pilot work up to about 1,235 ft³ (35 m³) for large production.
Yes. Spray systems add oils, flavors, binders or other liquids during mixing, and jackets provide heating or cooling.
Chemical, food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, plastics, cosmetics and animal feed plants.
Yes. Options include 304 or 316 stainless steel, abrasion-resistant steel, jackets, vacuum or pressure designs, various discharge valves, variable speed drives and explosion-protected designs. Hazardous-location requirements are reviewed for each U.S. project.
A ribbon mixer creates strong axial and radial flow for fast blending of powders and granules. A paddle mixer is gentler and may suit very fragile materials. The best choice depends on the product, accuracy, batch size and process.
