Metal Powder Sieving & Recovery

Screening, Classification and Recovery of Metal Powders

In laser and electron beam powder bed fusion, most of the powder in the build chamber is not melted. That powder is expensive, so it is collected, sieved and returned to the next build. A metal powder sieving and recovery system removes spatter, agglomerates and oversize particles, keeps the particle size distribution in spec, and moves powder between printer, sieve and storage without exposing operators.

TiERMAX configures recovery systems for additive manufacturing, metal 3D printing, metal injection molding and powder metallurgy. Typical powders include titanium Ti-6Al-4V, Inconel 625 and 718, 316L and 17-4PH stainless steel, AlSi10Mg aluminum, cobalt-chrome and tool steels. Options range from a standalone fine-mesh sieve to a complete closed loop with vacuum conveying, inert gas blanketing, oxygen monitoring and powder collection containers.

From powder recovery to complete powder handling - Benefits

Rather than selling just a sieve, TiERMAX reviews your powder, required cut point, operating atmosphere and connected equipment to configure a complete recovery solution.

Why Recover and Re-Sieve AM Powder?

Not all powder is consumed in a build. Before unused powder goes back into production, it must be screened to remove agglomerates, spatter and foreign material. A properly configured recovery system makes the separation repeatable while keeping powder loss to a minimum.

Why Recover and Re-Sieve AM Powder?

Why Metal Powders Are Difficult to Screen

AM powders are very fine, typically 15–63 µm for laser systems, dense, and sometimes reactive. Fine mesh blinds quickly, and reactive alloys such as titanium and aluminum must be handled under inert gas with low oxygen. Ultrasonic mesh cleaning, inert gas operation with oxygen sensors, grounded and sealed construction, and quick-release screens address these challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions

It screens unused powder from additive manufacturing, separating oversize and agglomerates from powder that is suitable for reuse.

Powder left after a build can contain spatter, agglomerates and oversize particles. Screening removes them and keeps powder properties consistent for the next build.

Yes. Systems can run under argon or nitrogen with oxygen monitoring for reactive alloys such as titanium and aluminum.

Ultrasonic or other mesh cleaning devices keep fine screens open and maintain throughput.
